When piezoelectric material is excited, it createsan acoustic signal as a function of the naturalresonance of the material. ExOsense™ sensorsgenerate this acoustic signal, direct it through thebottle wall and sense the reflected pulse.The amount of energy that is reflected isdetermined by the “acoustic impedance*mismatch” of the materials in use. For example,if sound passes through two materials withsimilar acoustic impedances (figure 1), very littleenergy will be reflected. If sound passes throughtwo materials with dissimilar impedance values(figure 2), the majority of the acoustic energy will bereflected. This acoustic impedance mismatch provides the basis for thedetection of liquid level.*Acoustic Impedance: a material property defined as the product of sound velocity andmaterial density.
