 Introduction
erratic 2
is a drum sample player with a host of randomising and velocity sensitive options to make any
drum pattern sound different on each loop. It can be used to add realism or surrealism depending on how you
want to set it up. At the core you have a 15 slot drum sampler with 6 velocity layers per slot, each layer can
be played according to velocity, cycled (round-robin) or randomly triggered. To vary things up a bit you can
determine the hit probability for each slot and add a random factor for the velocity, pan and swing for each hit.
In addition to the velocity layers, this update adds velocity-sensitive decay envelopes for volume & filter cut-
off, as well as velocity sensitivity to pitch and filter cut-off. Another new feature is the hit repeat probability,
with delay time, repeat velocity and velocity sensitive feedback. The step-sequencer is replaced by a more
flexible midi / piano-roll triggering, which allows better management of note precision, long patterns and
different time signatures. Improvements have been made to give 4 choke groups across all samples, better
mute/solo options, sample reverse, sample normalisation, MIDI out and more samples than ever before.

 Installation
To install erratic 2, you should copy the full contents of the rar file into your VST directory and install in your
host as you would any other VST instrument. This will place all the included samples in your VST directory in
order for the presets to work. You can however load samples from any folder or location for your own
patches.
If you do want to move the erratic samples folder to another directory or hard drive, then the presets will not
work unless you re-load the samples from the new folder. A better method is to move the entire erratic rar
contents, including the .dll file, to your preferred samples folder, and add this as a new location for VSTs in
your host.
There is also a single-out version of erratic included in the download, see below for install instructions
Sample Playback from RAM
erratic 2 loads all the samples from a preset into RAM to make playback quicker and less CPU intensive, but
may lead to a short delay and CPU spike when first loading a preset or pressing play on your transport
controls, depending on the host. This delay will only happen the first time whilst the samples are loaded and
will not occur again until you change presets. When changing presets, erratic 2 may play some samples from
the previous preset until the new samples are fully loaded into RAM and overwrite the old one’s. Again, this
will only occur once during sample load. However it is not advised to change presets while the host is playing
due to the CPU spike, which has the potential to freeze the host program.
If there are any issues with samples not loading correctly, pressing the ‘reload’ button will force a full reload of
all samples.
If you have low RAM in your system (less than 512MB) then you should make sure ‘mono’ is enabled and
consider reducing the quality setting from high (default) to good.
Multi-out and Single-out audio
erratic 2 is a multi-out plugin (erratic_2.dll) and has 15 stereo outputs, one for each sample slot, so that you
can process each audio output in your host mixer. Some hosts do not support this function or are difficult to
set up, so a single-out version is also provided (erratic_2_s.dll). If you wish to use
only
the single-out version,
you can simply move the ‘erratic2_samples’ folder from the ‘erratic_2’ folder to the ‘erratic_2_s’ folder and it
will load the preset samples into the single-out version. If you wish to use both versions, you can copy the
‘erratic2_samples’ folder from the ‘erratic_2’ folder to the ‘erratic_2_s’ folder
MIDI out
erratic 2 has a midi out function, which means it transmits all the internally processed midi signals to the
output on midi channel 1, so you can use it to trigger an external sampler or synth. This includes the swing, hit
probability and hit repeat functions. Please consult your host manual to set up routing the midi signals to
another plugin.

 Controls
You can globally change the sample playback stereo mode and quality level. By default, erratic2 is in mono
and high quality. Mono will automatically convert all samples to mono, saving RAM. You can reduce the
quality if you do not have enough RAM to load all the samples, or if you deliberately want a trashy sound. If
you want to use stereo samples, switch off the mono button, although this will increase RAM usage
There are 15 sample slots, each slot can contain 6 samples, one for each velocity layer. You can select from
1 to 6 active layers and erratic will play the appropriate layer according to the velocity, in a cycle or randomly
depending on the mode you choose.
Slot number
Press the slot number to see the right hand parameters for that slot (velocity, pan, pitch etc)
Midi note number
Each slot is triggered by a user-defined midi note. Click the note number and type in the new value. If you are
unsure of the midi note reference numbers, erratic will display the appropriate midi note number as you press
a key on your controller / piano roll.
You can set up erratic to be triggered by standard midi note assignments or customise to your own
preferences. You can assign the same midi note to several slots if you want to trigger layers on the same
note. You can also assign the same sample to multiple slots if you want to use different hit/repeat probabilities
on different midi notes for example.
Note: erratic 2 can only be triggered by midi channel 1
Layer display
Click the numbers 1 to 6 to see the filename and sample length (ms) for each layer
Layer mode
Select from vel, cyc or rnd
vel – plays the appropriate sample according the velocity of the note played. Layer 1 is the lowest velocity and
layer 6 is the highest velocity. See
Active Layers
for more detail.
cyc – plays the samples in a cycle, starting at layer 1 through to Layer 6 and repeating
rnd – plays a Layer at random each note
Active Layers
Drag the ‘layers’ box up and down to select the number of active layers.
If the number of layers is 1, then only Layer 1 is played.
If the number of layers is 3 then only Layers 1-3 are played
If the number of layers is 6, then all 6 Layers are played.
In ‘vel’ mode, the Layers are evenly distributed across the velocity range
load
Press load to load a new sample into the selected layer. Make sure you have selected the right layer (1-6)
before loading a sample. The filename and sample length will be displayed for the selected layer. Use ‘reload’
to force all samples to be reloaded into RAM.
n
Select ‘n’ to normalise all the samples in that slot. This will make sure the peak volume of each sample is at
0dB and is used to make a range of samples closer in relative volume. It is recommended to use this when in
‘vel’ mode, because erratic will automatically change the relative volume of the sample according to the
velocity. If you do not normalise the samples, then the lower velocity samples will be lower still when played at
low velocities.
 r
Select ‘r’ to reverse play all the samples in that slot
Audition (triangle)
Press the ‘play’ triangle to hear the sample played at full velocity. If you want to hear all the active layers, it is
best to put the slot in ‘cyc’ mode to cycle through the layers
Choke groups
There are four choke groups, a, b, c & d or select ‘-‘ for the sample slot to not be part of a choke group. These
are used for one sample slot to choke (cut off) the volume of another sample slot. An example would be that a
closed high hat and an open high hat are in a different sample slot, but in a real kit are played on the same
cymbal in either the open or closed state. Therefore only one could play at a time and playing one necessarily
means the other is choked. Typically, the open hat tail is choked when the hat is next played closed.
cut – select the choke group for that sample slot to belong to
by – select which choke group will cut that sample slot
s / m
‘s’ – solo
‘m’ – mute
Press ‘s’ to solo any sample slot. You can only solo one slot at a time and will need to press ‘all’ to get out of
solo mode
Press ‘m’ to mute any sample slot. You can mute as many slots as you want. Press ‘m’ again to un-mute.
Per sample slot parameters
All the parameters on the right hand side of the display are ‘per sample slot’, meaning the display only shows
the parameters for the currently selected sample slot. Please ensure you have selected the correct sample
slot (numbers 1 – 15 on the far left) before editing the parameters
All the knobs have a dual ‘meter’ display as well as a value in digits. The inner blue meter shows the current
knob value, the outer grey meter show the modulated value and updates each hit according to the
random/velocity level. Drag the knob up / down to change the value, or type directly into the display directly
below the knob.
Many knobs also have a ‘rnd’ or ‘vel’ with an on/off toggle. If this is turned on, it will affect the amount of
randomisation or velocity sensitivity. If turned off, the parameter will remain static. Drag the value up or down
to change it.
As a rule, turning anything off with the toggle will save CPU, so make sure you turn off everything you are not
using, especially in unused slots
vel
This parameter will change the velocity of the played note, it is not a volume control. As the knob changes the
note velocity, it will also affect all velocity sensitive parameters (layer, pitch, vol env, cut-off, cut-off env and
repeat feedback). By randomising the velocity, you can also directly modulate these velocity sensitive
parameters.
If you want to only change the slot volume without changing velocity, you have 2 options
i)
use your host mixer channel volume control (multi-out only)
ii)
use the volume knob on the erratic 2 interface
